Things to do and avoid doing at data centers

Avoid Things at Data Center

Data centers are powerful structures but like every other things in the world, they too need proper maintenance. This will ensure all the systems are working efficiently and keep the facility protected from digital disasters, financial losses and inefficient operations.

Standard practices that data centers should follow for proper maintenance of the facility.

DO’s

  • Plan and Organize: Planning is universally the first and foremost practice for any business. So always plan the maintenance strategies to keep off the impact of any disaster or any contingencies at the facility.
  • Prioritize maintenance: Every component of data center needs regular maintenance. However, different machines need different levels of upkeep, such as power related equipment including UPS systems, diesel generators, HVACs, switchgears, circuit breakers etc.
  • Regular upkeep for sophisticated machines: Your daily task-list is so long that you tend to ignore the machine maintenance part, but that may lead to inefficient operation and downtime. You may lose clients if you fail to deliver value or if your service level is degraded.
  • Make use of latest tools: Latest tools like Infrared scans (IR scans) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) will help in tracking the high temperature spots and manage optimized cooling in the facility.
  • Use efficient cooling techniques: Upgrade your traditional cooling methods with the latest efficient cooling technologies and save not only energy consumption but also a huge stacks of money.

Don’ts

  • Messy Cables: Tangled cables are a big ‘NO’ in data centers. There are cables everywhere hanging from the walls, coiled on the floor and twisted over server racks in the data centers. This cluttered and disordered cable arrangement may cause unforeseen accidents. Some may get stumbled in the cable loops and get hurt, apart from the cable disconnection and risks of data loss.
  • Eat or Drink: Eating and drinking should be strictly prohibited in the server area to avoid any spoilage.
  • Invite one and all for DC tour: Inviting your prospects to the data center is a right practice but allowing everyone to the site may lead to data theft. Keep a track of every access and allow only authorized entrances.

Well-organized data centers which follow the industry standard protocols and methods will definitely leave a long-lasting impression on your prospects and clients.
